We found ourselves rugged up on the first night of October this year, heading to St Kilda to have dinner at Andrew McConnell’s newest venture Golden Fields.
Confession: we mainly wanted to go for the lobster rolls which have been raved about everywhere, but more on this lobster roll later.
We were lucky enough to score a table at the bar as soon as we came in out of the cold. Probably because it was the AFL grand final night, and most people were out drinking(??). Knowing that we couldn’t book we rocked up anticipating to wait so it was a nice surprise to be able to be seated straight away!
Grilled octopus, mussels, celery and chilli paste
Steamed eggplant, silken tofu & pickled chillies
The piece de resistance: New England lobster roll, hot buttered bun, cold poached crayfish, watercress & kewpie mayo. First impressions: smells like a McDonald’s fillet o’ fish, but with an adult taste. Soooooooooooo good. Run, don’t walk and get to Golden Fields stat JUST to eat this. It is THAT good. If only they weren’t $15 we would have ordered at least another one each.
Steamed wild barramundi, broad beans, wilted leeks and miso butter
For dessert we had the ridiculously crayyyyycrayyyyyzyyy peanut butter parfait with salted caramel and soft chocolate. We actually ordered the same dessert at Cutler & Co, but this one was in a completely different league. The base was perfectly chewy (meringue? dacquoise?), and we demolished it.
