Karangahake Gorge

We had done many a drive through the Karangahake Gorge from Auckland home to Tauranga, and always said we should do a hike in there. So when our lovely friends Suzanne and Geoff offered to show us around we gleefully accepted.

It was the middle of winter so it was a wet day, but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits. Rugged up with our raincoats at the ready, we did the Windows Walk. We were intrigued when Suz and Geoff handed us some flashlights but it all made sense when we entered the hill face into the old mining tunnels. The DOC describes it: “This short walk boasts beautiful scenery and spectacular mining remnants including disused gold mining tunnels”. The “windows” are cut outs in the hill face which overlooks the gorge – used for mining previously!

Some of the tunnels even had glow worms! It was such a fun walk!

When we were done and famished, Suz and Geoff took us to The Falls Retreat restaurant/cafe which is a cosy beautiful spot hidden in the forest. We had some yummy snacks before we called it a day.

Thank you again for the wonderful day out, Suzanne and Geoff!! We had a fantastic time!!
